However, it is more susceptible to moisture damage than fiber cement if the finish coat is compromised. Proper installation and maintenance of the paint or finish are critical to its long-term performance.
Traditional wood siding has been used for centuries and remains a favorite for its natural beauty and charm. When properly maintained, species like cedar and redwood can last decades thanks to their natural oils that resist rot and insects. That said, wood is the most high-maintenance option of the three. It requires regular painting or staining every 5-7 years and is vulnerable to moisture, rot, warping, and pest damage if neglected. In climates with heavy rain, humidity, or extreme temperature changes, wood siding can deteriorate much faster without consistent upkeep.
So which one wins on durability? Fiber cement takes the top spot for sheer resilience and low-maintenance longevity, especially in harsh climates. LP SmartSide is an excellent middle-ground option. It’s durable, easier to work with, and more budget-friendly. Traditional wood siding, while beautiful, finishes last in terms of long-term durability unless you’re committed to regular maintenance. Ultimately, the best choice comes down to your climate, budget, and how much upkeep you’re willing to put in over the years.
